Flooding and Landslides in Peninsular Malaysia

According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) on 12 December 2022, heavy rainfall has caused floods across the southern Malay Peninsula (Malaysia) and northern Sumatra (Indonesia). On 2 December 2022, AFSIS Secretariat led by Dr. Waraporn Saelee, AFSIS Manager, and Mr. MIYAKE Yasuhiro, AFSIS Japanese Expert, had opportunities to respectively visit Mr. Chantanon Wannakejohn, Secretary General, Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), the host of AFSIS Secretariat office. In addition, Mr. MIYAKE Yasuhiro also had an opportunity to visit Mr. Vinit Atisook, Deputy Secretary General of OAE and Mr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager of APTERR Secretariat as well.

Earthquake in Cianjur Regency, Indonesia

On 21 November 2022 in Java province, Indonesia, an earthquake of 5.6 magnitudes at a shallow depth of 10 km hit the Cianjur region, triggering landslides and causing buildings to collapse, including schools where classes were underway. The epicenter of the earthquake was on land 10 km southwest of Cianjur Regency (West Java Province). Warnings for heavy rainfall with lighting and strong winds have been issued for 23-25 November over North Sumatra and South Kalimantan Province while light rain is expected across Cianjur Regency (West Java Province).

Local Training on Real-Time AFSIS Project (3rd phase) in Vientiane, Lao PDR

The Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS), funded and organized the Local Training on Establishing Real-Time AFSIS and Development of Human Resources 3rd Phase Project during 23-25 November 2022, in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Additionally, the training was provided by the EGIS consortium as the instructors.

On 14 November 2022, the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) Space Applications for Environment (SAFE) Initiative with the collaboration of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Japan, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) of India, Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) of Thailand, Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC), and AFSIS Secretariat organized the online Training Program on Satellite-Derived Rice Planted Area Data for AFSIS’s Rice Growing Outlook (RGO) for Agriculture Management in the ASEAN which is the second training following the previous program in July 2022.

Tropical Cyclone NORU (KARDING), Philippines

Regarding the situation report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), from 22-26 September 2022, Tropical Strom NORU (local name: Karding) formed over the western Philippines Sea and intensified into a Super Typhoon (STY) Category after a period of explosive intensification moving westward. The center of the eye of STY NORU was estimated at 230 km East of Infanta, Quezon with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 230 km/h, and a central pressure of 925 Hecto Pascal (hPa).
