The Workshop on Promoting Rice Planted Area and Production Estimation Using INAHOR and Space-based Technologies in Thailand

On 12-13 February 2025, the AFSIS Secretariat, in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Japan and the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), Ministry of Agriculture Cooperatives (MOAC), conducted a workshop conducted a workshop  The Promoting Rice Planted Area and Production Estimation Using INAHOR and Space-based Technologies in Thailand at the Meeting Room 2, Innovation Building, 3rd FL, Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE)

The workshop under the APRSAF SAFE projects aims to strengthen the capabilities of officials from the OAE in utilizing remote sensing data to assess rice cultivation areas and estimate rice production using ALOS-2 and Sentinel-2 satellites. This initiative is integral to improving agricultural monitoring through the INAHOR system.

The workshop on 12 February 2026 was welcomed by Dr. Sumanya Ngandee, AFSIS Manager, and officially opened by Mr. Krongsak Songraksa, Deputy Secretary General, OAE, MOAC, Dr. Shinichi Sobue, Co-Chair of the SAFE Executive Board of JAXA, and Ms. Sari Murai, Section Chief, MAFF Japan. The morning session consisted of an INAHOR hands-on training for CAI staff, including the results and operational training covering both review and newly introduced functions.

In the afternoon session, presentations were delivered on the overview of the APRSAF SAFE Project and INAHOR, as well as on the creation of training data using agricultural machinery location information. The INAHOR estimation results of dry-season rice-planted area in 2024-2025 in Thailand were also introduced. The session concluded with an evaluation and discussion, followed by closing remarks and confirmation of action items among CAI, AFSIS Secretariat, JAXA, and MAFF Japan.

On 13 February 2026, a field survey was conducted in Suphan Buri Province, covering four sub-districts: Song Phi Nong, Bang Pla Ma, Muang Suphan Buri, and Sri Pra Chan. Participants visited paddy fields in each area to observe rice cultivation conditions and compare field situations with satellite-based estimation results.

The event was completed through the cooperation of the AFSIS Secretariat, JAXA, OAE Thailand, and related organizations, contributing to the continued application of space-based technologies for rice planted area and production estimation in Thailand.

The In-Country Workshop on Promoting Rice Planted Area and Production Estimation Using Space-based Technologies in Lao PDR was jointly organized by AFSIS Secretariat, JAXA, MAFF Japan, and MAE Lao PDR under the AFSIS-GIS and SAFE projects. The event was held in Vientiane with hands-on training on 9 February 2026 and a workshop on 10 February 2026.

The 1st Japan - Thailand Expert Dialogue on Agricultural Statistics

On 13–15 January 2026, the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), Thailand, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Japan, and the AFSIS Secretariat, conducted the 1st Meeting of Japan–Thailand Expert Dialogue on Agricultural Statistics. The meeting was held at the Office of Agricultural Economics and field survey activities in Chonburi Province.

ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) Table Top Exercise

On 3–4 December 2025, the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) Secretariat participated in the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) Table Top Exercise (TTX) held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
