The ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) in cooperation with the National Information Society Agency (NIA) of the Republic of Korea hosted the capacity building workshop on “ASEAN+3 Rice Trade Outlook and IT-based Agricultural Development” during 29 May to 1 June 2018 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The objective is to enhance capacity of high-level officials related to ASEAN+3 Rice Trade (Supply and Demand) Forecast Model using EXCEL and agricultural data collection using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools and techniques (e.g. Geographic Information System: GIS, Satellite, and Drone).
There are 20 participants fromalmost all ASEAN member states. The delegates learned about the concept of ASEAN+3 Rice Trade (Forecast) Model using EXCEL, Korea’s experience for agricultural and rural development, 4th industrial revolution and agricultural R&D in Korea, Korean Smart Farm Policy and Technology, Korean experience for transforming society via ICT, and the application of ICT for agricultural data collection. They also shared and discussed how each country collects and manages agricultural information, especially rice-related data through the rice value chain using information systems. Moreover, the participants had filed trip to visit the Rural Development Administration (RDA) in Wansan-gu district, North Jeolla province and see Korea’s best practices farm (a tomato and paprika smart farm) in Buyeo county, South Chungcheong province.






On 31 July – 1 August 2023, the AFSIS Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) of Lao PDR conducted the Workshop for the demonstration of INAHOR utilization for 2023 Rainy Season Rice in Vang Vieng, Lao PDR.
On 21 July 2023, Mr. Hideya Yamada, Director General of the Statistics Department, and Mr. Masahiro Hosaka, Deputy Director of the Statistics Planning Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Japan visited the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) to attend the bilateral meeting with Mr. Chantanon Wannakejohn, Secretary-General of the OAE, Ministry of Agricultural and Cooperative (MOAC) of Thailand, to discuss the effective and smooth implementation of AFSIS in the long term.
On 5 June 2023, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS), a department of the Department of Science and Technology, raised the status alert level for Mayon Volcano in Albay Province, Region V (Bicol Region) from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 2 due to the repeated collapses of the growing summit dome of the volcano, which caused an increasing number and volume of rockfall events. The alert status of Mayon Volcano was raised to level 3 on 8 June with the occurrence of a total of 267 rockfall events and 2 volcanic earthquakes. Additionally, three Pyroclastic Density Current (PDC) events were observed on the Bonga (southeast) and Basud (east) Gullies.
On 28 June 2023, Dr. Waraporn Saelee, an outgoing AFSIS manager, signed and handed over the position of AFSIS manager to Dr. Sumanya Ngandee, who will perform as a new AFSIS manager starting on 30 June 2023. The ceremony took place at the AFSIS Secretariat office, Innovation Building, Office of Agricultural Economics
