Agricultural Database Development for Better Policy Making and Ensuring Food Security

On 18 May 2022, AFSIS Secretariat had been invited to participate in the conference titled “Agricultural Database Development for Better Policy Making and Ensuring Food Security” as a joint event of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) and thePermanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CLSS) via Zoom platform.

 

The representatives from the AFSIS Secretariat were Dr.Waraporn Saelee, AFSIS Manager, Mr. Tanabodee Kheosipalard, Statistician, and Ms. Prodpran Lomthong, Project Coordinator staff, had attended this meeting.



The main objective of the workshop was for representatives of agricultural statistics department from IOFS/CILSS common member states to enhance the capacity of the IOFS Food Balance Database and develop the member states’ agricultural database platform.

 

During the meeting, AFSIS Secretariat, as the specialized institute of ASEAN Food Security Information, was honored to deliver the presentation at Session 2: Some Experiences on Agricultural Database Systems from IOFS Partners.

 

Dr. Waraporn Saelee had introduced AFSIS to the Meeting, and also shared experiences on Agricultural Database Development through the recent AFSIS implementations including the core reports (ACO, EWI, and RGO) and Website and Statistic Database, the cooperative activities with other related agencies, along with the future work plan.

 

At the end of the conference, the Meeting expressed a great appreciation for the valuable information and experience from AFSIS Secretariat.

 

Another conference from IOFS will be conducted in Maldives on "National Food security Information System" during 28-29 June 2022.

The self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) is a key indicator of food security. It shows how well Southeast Asian countries can meet rice demand through domestic production, with the region overall remaining increasingly self-sufficient despite ongoing challenges.

Asia and the Pacific Food Systems Forum 2026

On 19 March 2026, the AFSIS Secretariat participated in the Asia and the Pacific Food Systems Forum 2026 under the theme “Feeding the Future, Sustaining the Planet” in Manila, the Philippines, organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) . The forum aimed to promote food security policies, review ADB’s related initiatives, and support long-term food systems transformation.
